CBHP in Ghana

Two Great Opportunities to Go to Ghana with CBHP

Jon Murphy
October 31, 2025

Located on the second floor of the new Impact and Prosperity Epicenter, the University of Utah’s Center for Business, Health, and Prosperity (CBHP) offers students the opportunity to gain leadership, career development, and networking skills through courses, internships, and projects that positively impact society.

The Center’s international initiative, Prosperity U Global, is pleased to offer two short-term, for-credit study abroad courses this academic year: ENTP 5800/6800 and ENTP 5850/6850.

The first class, Prosperity Promotion and Entrepreneurship, is a 10-week course on prosperity-based development. The course meets one night a week on campus for eight weeks with Professor Stephen Alder, Director of the Center, and culminates with an opportunity for students to conduct real-world business consulting with entrepreneurs in Ghana during Spring Break. The course is open to undergraduate and graduate students of all majors.

As part of the summer course, Business Development in Emerging Markets, students spend three weeks in Ghana in June, learning current trends in business, health, and community development, while experiencing daily life in a developing country and working hands-on with local organizations. Students engage in curated learning projects that improve health and well-being across underserved communities in Ghana.

Last summer, the program partnered with Health 2 Go, an organization that educates local citizens and helps improve access to healthcare across rural regions of the country. The summer course also offers an optional fourth week in Oxford, England, during which students discuss and reflect on their experiences in Ghana while on campus at Oxford University. This portion of the course also includes cultural study in Oxford and London.

Like the spring class, the summer course is open to all majors. Both courses earn three credit hours, with students who travel to England in summer earning a fourth credit hour. Upon completion of these courses, several previous program participants have also interned with the CBHP and continue to work on a variety of domestic and international community service projects.

For both programs in Ghana, students stay at Ensign Global University, a beautiful, modern campus about an hour outside the capital of Accra. In additional to hands-on fieldwork, the spring and summer courses include educational excursions across Ghana, such as a trip to Cape Coast and Elmina Castle as well as a wildlife safari in Mole National Park.

Any student or faculty member interested in these courses can find additional information on the CBHP’s website under the Student Experiences tab.  Our spring course invites 20-25 students to participate each semester. The summer course enrollment capacity is 30-35 students.

Representatives from CBHP are happy to share course promotional materials with administrators and instructors. The Center also welcomes the opportunity to visit individual classes and organizations on campus to speak directly with students about these amazing, transformative, and cost-effective study abroad experiences.
