The University of Utah Office for Global Engagement (OGE) officially welcomed the English Language Institute (ELI) into its organizational structure on April 2, 2026, marking a significant step in expanding support for international students and strengthening the university’s global mission.
Founded in 1990, ELI serves as the university’s intensive English language program, providing preparatory language instruction for international students, visitors, and members of the local community. Through online courses, evening classes, and immersive academic programs, ELI helps students build the language skills needed for academic and professional success.
As part of this transition, ELI will relocate from Research Park to the INSCC building at the heart of campus, placing its services in a more student-centered environment. The move is expected to increase student access to campus resources, including advising, housing, libraries, and support services, while fostering stronger connections to university life.
“ELI plays an important role in supporting international student access and success, particularly through language preparation and pathway programming,” said Randy McCrillis, interim associate vice president for University Connected Learning and senior international officer. “The work closely aligns with many of our core functions across OGE, and this transition is an important step toward deeper integration.”
ELI currently serves approximately 400 student sessions annually through its Intensive English Program, in addition to roughly 500 learners each year through community-based programs.
For many students, ELI serves as a critical bridge to university admission. By helping learners strengthen their English proficiency, the institute supports future matriculated students in reaching their educational goals and becoming more fully engaged members of the campus community.
“This transition positions ELI as a more integrated part of the university’s academic and global engagement infrastructure,” said Casey Poe, director of the English Language Institute. “It also creates new opportunities for collaboration with programs such as the Utah Asia Campus, international initiatives, and academic departments across the university.”
The integration reflects OGE’s broader mission to advance cross-cultural exchange, international partnerships, and global learning opportunities. Through programs that include learning abroad, international student services, faculty exchange, and intercultural engagement, OGE continues to connect the University of Utah community with the world.
By bringing ELI closer to the center of campus and aligning its work more directly with global engagement initiatives, the University of Utah is reaffirming its commitment to international student success, institutional collaboration, and a more globally connected future.
