On May 31, 2026, the University of Utah signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Institute of International Education, Inc., to join the Global Engineering Education Exchange (Global E3) consortium.
Global E3 is a group of more than 65 international higher-ed institutions known for their engineering expertise. Sited in over 25 countries, the collective makes high-impact study abroad experiences available to engineering students—a group traditionally bound by demanding course plans that can make it difficult to incorporate international experiences.
Students at participating universities can study abroad in Global E3 programs that are certified to maintain high rigor. Any coursework completed during the study abroad will be counted for credit at the student’s home university.
By joining the program, students at the University of Utah’s John and Marcia Price College of Engineering will have additional opportunities to study at universities in Argentina, Hong Kong, Egypt, Spain, and more. In exchange, international students from participating Global E3 schools will be able to attend the University of Utah and participate in the John and Marcia Price College of Engineering.
“We’re excited to offer an additional pathway to high-impact international experiences for our students through this program,” says Mathieu Francoeur, Price Engineering’s Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. “We’re honored to be included among an elite group of institutions.”
Anastasia Fynn, director of International Student & Scholar Services, says, “Engineering is inherently a global profession. Giving students the opportunity to study, collaborate, and problem-solve alongside peers from around the world prepares them not just to be excellent engineers, but to be thoughtful, culturally competent global citizens.”
These experiences will better prepare students to excel in a modern global workforce. Students who study internationally gain experience working in unfamiliar environments, adjusting to alternate cultural norms, and often communicating in a different language. They also benefit from the perspectives of peers working on similar problems in in different contexts.
The benefits of participating in the Global E3 program also include an increase in international student enrollment on campus, which opens the door for more global collaboration and research. “This consortium opens new doors for our engineering students and signals to the world that we are serious about preparing graduates who can lead in any environment,” says Fynn.
Interested students should schedule an appointment with their academic advisor to ensure they complete appropriate prerequisites and plan their time abroad.
