The University of Utah’s International Student and Scholar Services office, Learning Abroad office, and International Studies Program have partnered to charter the newest chapter of the International Honors Society, Phi Beta Delta. The newly formed Theta Rho chapter invites both international and domestic students and scholars to celebrate their academic achievements and involvement in cultural exchange.
Phi Beta Delta plans to induct over 120 members in its inaugural year, including university staff, faculty, students, and scholars. Anyone in the U community who is involved in learning abroad or international studies is welcome to apply.
Phi Beta Delta is an academic fraternity started at California State University in 1986. It is the first honors society dedicated to recognizing scholarly achievement in international education. To date, there are over 200 active chapters of Phi Beta Delta in the United States, with the U’s new Theta Rho being the first chapter in the state of Utah. International chapters are also active in Canada, Mexico, Switzerland, Italy, and Bulgaria.
The U’s Phi Beta Delta chapter aims to host workshops and events to showcase its members’ vast academic interests, achievements, as well as provide a forum for students and scholars to network with one another. Theta Ro also plans to promote its members, especially those involved in research, on a national scale.
“We look forward to showcasing the global reach of the University of Utah, and the diverse interests of our students involved in cultural diplomacy.” says Olivia Morfas, chapter coordinator and student experience manager for ISSS.
Following its initial induction ceremony later this Spring, the Theta Rho chapter plans to attend the virtual 2025 Annual Conference for all chapters of Phi Beta Delta and represent the U on a national scale.
